Summary: Way back before the rapid evolution occured, in what is now Lantain (a small town in China.), there lived seaweed and worm like creatures. They lived peacefully until one day they mysteriously died. Their death led to the 3000 fossiles "preserved between beds of black shale". The waters have no oxygen that far down, but scientists managed to discover them anyway. Chinese scientists have discovered 15 different species down there so far, some of the species found in rocks that "formed shortly after the largest ice age, where much of the ocean was frozen". In order to get further in the investigation of the story of oxygen, scientists must sample the rocks.
Opinion: I think this is really cool, we might actually learn where oxygen came from, because I know in my head I always think did it just pop out of nowhere? I am very interested to see how this works out. With the changes in the rocks, and the fact that there isn't oxygen down there as of right now, might complicate things a bit. I think the investigation could lead to a lot more than just oxygen, it has already lead to 15 new species being found inbetween the rocks.
