Currently, one of the leading causes for hearing loss in children is cytomegalovirus (CMV). There is a new test for newborn babies, a simple swab of the mouth right after birth. Most babies do not show symptoms at birth, so it is key to detect this disease as soon as possible. This is passed down from mother to baby during the pregnancy. These mouth swabs are generally taken within the first day of birth.

I find this really cool. I hate to see anyone suffer, especially a baby. I know it's hard enough growing up, but I couldn't imagine how hard it would be to grow up without sound. This would greatly impact your speech, learning, and social life. I really hope we can find a vaccine for this disease. Perhaps, one day, we could tests the mothers before they give birth, so we can detect this disease twice as early.
