LSUHSC research finds protein that protects cancer cells from chemo and radiation therapy
Opinion: I think the research that Dr. Sakamuri is doing is a really good thing. My granfather had cancer and altough it was detcted early and it didnt do any severe damage, he nor anyone else should have to go through the pain of dealing with cancer or have to see a family member go through it. Its amazing how far we have come in life to keep discovering new vaccines, medicines, and treatments to the illnesses we have today. The fact that a quarter of the deaths in the US are from cancer is pretty scary. Hopefully we'll reach a point where no one has to worry about any type of cancer.

I personally do not think that bilingualism is a disease. It is just simply learning another language. It is the same as learning different maths or sciences. To me, this seems like a far stretch for this finding. Although, it is neat that scientists are able to come to this conclusion, by looking at DNA.

Cruise Ship Infection
My opinion on this is half and half. It is a good thing that they have ways of preventing outbreaks on a ship. The bad side to this is that they have nowhere to put sick passengers besides the nurse office, and then she gets sick. This disease kills about 21 million annually (serious killer). Thanks for reading :)

Monitoring Coral Reefs
New Targeted Drug Helps Smokers Quit
The Academy of Finlands Research Program has been striving to create a drug for the use of smokers to help them quick. The new drug slows down the metabolism of nicotine, which would help smokers cut down the number of cigarettes they smoke. They have found that nicotine is absorbed rapidly through the lining of the mouth but most is absorbed in the lungs. The nicotine then goes into the brain. Once the nicotine reaches the liver, it is metabolised by an enzyme called CYP2A6. The enzyme can help smokers curb the need to smoke.
I think this drug is a great discovery. I think that this may be the best plan for anyone who wants to stop smoking. The new opportunities are advancing from a patch to a pill and going from outward help to internal help. This gives smokers the opportunity to live a healthier more efficient life. In the end, this pill will be a relaxing therapy to smokers who have the urge to quit.

Elephants Benefit From Elder Matriarchs' Experience
Kendall Roberson
Scientists have gained the knowledge that elephants benefit by being led by older matriarchs. A matriarch is the head woman or female in the group. The matriarch is better at locating and scaring off predatory male lions. Elephants with older matriarchs are able to organize and march toward a roar to challenge an assumed predator, more quickly as a united, or "whole" front better than each elephant for itself. Groups with matriarchs of 60 years or over are able to conclude if a lion's roar is a female or a male roar (male lions are far more dangerous), and can react quicker and more productive than groups with younger matriarchs. The matriarchs of the groups live to be around 60 years old and they remain group leaders until they die. Also, the matriarchs have no hearing loss at the age of 60.
I believe that the idea of having an older matriarch is a good thing. Having a matriarch brings a different perspective to the group because a woman can hear and determine different things than a male can. I like the idea of how matriarchs are still group leaders until they die because it keeps consistency in the group. Matriarchs should continue to be the leaders of the groups because they are productive, organized, and it has made the group more defensive to lion predators. Elephants benefit more from matriarchs compared to male leaders due to the organization, hearing experience, and group unity.

Weed-eating fish?
This is an astounding discovery for the preservation of the coral reefs. Due to the low population of the fish they will try to preserve some of them. If coral reefs were gone there would be one less natural beauty in this world. The weed eating fish will be such a great help we may never have to lose another coral reef again. Thanks for reading :)

Cat Allergy? I foresee a cure in your future…
Do you have cat allergies? Well, your problems could soon be over as a team of immunologist at the University’s School of Molecular Medical Science has discovered the cell component that causes this reaction. This team is lead by Drs Ghaem-Maghami and Martinez-Pomares. They believe this development to be extremely good, with all the recent asthma attacks in the last few decades they can use all the help they can get in the UK. Recent statistics show that at least three people die every day from an asthma attack over there. When a person has asthma their symptoms worsen as they are exposed to airborne allergens that can come from places like cat dander, dust mites, and pollen. At least 40% of children are allergic to cats, or rather their dander. With their worsening attacks the doctors are ecstatic that they have found this cell component. Along with this information they can continue research to create better products and solutions that can eventually help cure asthma once and for all.
In my opinion I believe this to be a big burden that has just been wiped off the back of humanity. My brother has a minor case of asthma and it is a relief to see that this little problem can be washed away. It is very sad to hear that all these kids in the UK are dying because of this. Some even say that it has reached epidemic proportions in a lot of industrialized countries.

Controlling Skin Regeneration and Skin Cancer
This article talks about research found by Fernando Camargo, PhD and the study's senior researcher, and his colleagues that skin cancer and skin regeneration are close in function. The team experimented on a molucule called Yap1 to cause large tumor growth. When Yap1 was suppressed in mice, experimental guinea pigs, their epideral skin cells did not expand and the mice had very thin skin. They also found that more Yap1 aids to thicker skin, but activation of Yap1 led to "squmaous-cell carcinoma-like tumors". More research showed that Yap1 was inactivated by alpha-cantenin, which attachs to the Yap1 and keeps it out of the nucleus, but when squamous carcinoma cells mutate with alpha-cantenin they can get back into the nucleus and cause tumor growth. The alpha-cantenin can tell skin cells whether to grow or to stop growing through the Yap1. This molecular "switch" they found could lead to finding ways to grow skin cells when needed or reverse and stop cancerous cell growth.
I think that this is really neat, that like they were able to find the connection between the growth of cancerous tumors to the growth of skin cells. If this "switch" can lead to easier skin cell growth for people with burns or that are in need of new skin, and then turn around and stop skin cancer cells that's awesome. I would totally agree with further research on this subject, because now more people are getting into tanning and being tan all the time, which can lead to serious cases of skin cancer. So, in this case it's like, they can get new skin if they need it or have their cancer cells inactivated all through the same research.

An Alzheimer's vaccine in a nasal spray
Opinion: The reseach Dr. Frenkel is doing is a very good thing. Many people i know have been effected by this disease and have had to deal with the pain of their loved one not remembering them. If there was even talk of a cure then i'd be all for it. Since there haven't been any toxic effects on animals then we should proceed and try the cure on humans. I enjoyed this current event alot because i could relate to the topic.

Honey Pot Protocells
I find it very intriguing that there could possibly be a new line of antiviral drugs. The success rate of these protocells is astounding, and is no doubt another step in biological research and the medical field. I hope that more protocells such as these can be created and used to work with other forms of viruses. I'm hoping from this there will come more development and new discoveries in the world of science.

I think astrocytes are very important. They help our bodies perform which is a good thing. Without these starshaped cells our brains couldnt function properly. I hope research continues to investigate deeper into their purposes. These cells may help alzhiemers which could be a big realief for families in the U.S
Scientists Discover how Spider Silk Works
Summary
A study by Cell Press looked into exactly what spider silk thread is. Spider silk is known to have strength like steel, toughness like kevlar, and density much less that our materials in use already. Being such an amazing material, in was inevitable that people would want to know how to reproduce it. The study looked into the exact atomic makeup of the two building blocks of spider silk, soft amorphous, and hard crystalline materials. The researchers were able to recreate the thread, using several different patterns to find the one most useful and similar to actual spider silk.
Opinion
This was a good article that outlined a good idea. If humans are able to take something out of nature and recreate it, and have it be better that something artificial, that will benefit us to no end. Not only would it work better that synthetic material, but it would be more environmentally friendly, and possibly more cost effective. The scientists that completed this study had to make the silk from the ground up, starting with the atomic components and building from that. If a process could be developed in which spider silk, or any similar substance, could be mass produced in a lab setting, it could change the way things are made for the better

Liver, Not Brain, May Be Origin of Alzheimer’s Plaques
mad scientists part 1

Partners of Cancer Patients Become ill.
This is actually very shocking. To be ill because your partner has cancer. I hope this is not true or it is very rare. To have cancer just because you are with your partner seems like a sad story. Its not only cancer, but a whole bunch of other illness like cardiovascular disease. I hope people will think about this, but not too much and leave your partners who have cancer.
Lactate More Important Then You Think
Researchers are finding that the empzyme Lactate may be more important in the brain then we thought. According to their research Lactate is needed to form and remember long term memories but not short term. When they took Lactate away from lab mice and did a series of memory test they remembered for a little while but then later forgot. If the Lactate processes is disrupted then memory problems seem to occur.
I think that this is a very important find, its helping to understand certain diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. While in the past we thought that Lactate was just needed for energy purposes; we now know that it serves a way more important part. This discovery could be vital to those who are lactose intolerant, where their patterns maybe interrupted often. I really hope they continue their research further.

epilepsy
In teens there is a disease appearing called Lafora disease. It is genetic and caused by improper glycogen buildup. The enzyme glycogen synthase usually gets on glucose molecules, but about 1 out of 10000 glucose molecules it attaches to a phosphate molecule. They release lafora bodies which are bodies of acid mucopolysaccharides into the brain and neurons. Because glycogen constantly breaks and builds up it gives the phosphate time to build up and cause chemical defects in the glycogen. Scientists are blaming glycogen synthase for the disease.
For those who don't know, epilepsy is a nervous system condition that stops signals to the brain. Glycogen is what stores energy in the liver and present in muscles. Lafora disease is quite painfull if you think about it. It degrates your energy while "poisoning" your nervous system. The comparison to mice shows that that it is most common in us. the second gene leading to the disease sounds like a possible link to finding a solution
Eastern Cougar is Declared Extinct, With an Asterisk
Kendall Roberson
This past Wednesday, March 2, 2011, the Eastern Cougar was declared extinct. The last Eastern Cougar seen was seven decades ago and the Fish and Wildlife Service were the ones who declared it extinct, and it should be taken off the nation's endangered species list. However, many scientists believe that the Eastern Cougar is not actually extinct. A genetic study that took place in 2000 established that there is no real difference between the eastern and western cougars. The last known Eastern Cougar was trapped in the late 1930's and was held captive, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
I believe that the Eastern Cougar is extinct. Even though some scientists believe it is not because of the relatively close genetics of the Western Cougar, the "Eastern" Cougar is technically extinct. The Fish and Wildlife Service is an educated organization and they know more about the ecosystem and wildlife than anyone else in the country. If scientists were so worried about the Eastern Cougar becoming extinct, then they should have tried to reproduce it in the late 1930's with the last of the Eastern Cougar species. Now, since the Eastern Cougar is extinct, it cannot be reproduced or brought back into the ecosystem, which can hurt more than just the cougar population. The Eastern Cougar should be taken off the endangered species list because it is now extinct.

Alzheimer's Vaccine?
An influenza vaccine turned into an Alzheimer's vaccine can now prevent strokes and Alzheimer's disease in one tiny spray. This can stop current Alzheimer symptoms and prevent future symptoms from occurring. It guarantees to protect from stroke, a cause of Alzheimer's. It can also reverse brain tissue damage. It tricks the brain into producing more healthy cells that can be used to attack the Alzheimer's and prevent the strokes from happening. Currently, no animals have shown any poisonings from this, and it is said to cure 80% of trial patients.
I find this astonishing that scientists/doctors basically found a cure for Alzheimer's. This is completely mind boggling. Although, I would be skeptical to try this. It sounds like a good idea in theory, but it has been tested only on animals, and a few select patients, it has yet to go "mainstream". I feel it would make me more susceptible to a stroke than to prevent it. Maybe within a few more years of testing, they can completely put Alzheimer's to a halt, and make the vaccine mandatory, like Polio or Hepatitis.
Algae Converted to Butanol; Fuel Can Be Used in Automobiles
Bacteria Communicate with Nanotubes
I think that this discovery by Professor Ben-Yehuda will lead to the development of new types of antibiotics, and help the fight against bacteria. Scientists are already working as fast as they can to outrun bacteria in the race of antibiotics versus resistance, and this discovery may be able to slow down bacteria's rate of resistance. While it might not cure us of harmful bacteria, this discovery will allow us to fight them better.

spider silk
Summary: Scientists begin to "unravel" the mystery as to why spider silk is so strong. The two main things in spider silk are soft amorphous and strong crystalline. Scientists began by studying the atoms that make up amorphous and crystalline. After dissecting the materials, scientists discovered the soft amorphous is responsible for elasticity, and the crystalline is responsible for "toughness".
Opinion: This is really cool. Eventually I am hoping that they will make other things based on the ingredients of spider silk. It is extremely cool that that silk can hold the spider up, and catch dinner all at the same time, I wonder what it could do for humans.
This will be useful because Alzheimers claims so many lives. Will all this coming in who knows what we'll invent next. But with all these guarantees will they end up truthful. People also do not die of Alzheimers they die of a stroke they get when they have Alzheimers. This concludes my event. Thanks for reading! :)
