Ends of Chromosomes Protected by Stacked Coiled DNA Caps

Ends of Chromosomes Protected
Agustin Gonzalez

Summary:

This weeks blog is about the telomeres at the end of chromosomes being stopped from falling off after everytime they divide or reproduce. Researchers at the Universiry of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have been researching the ends of the strands of chromosomes. They are seeing how they can put these "caps" made from specialized proteins and satcks of DNA on the tips of the strands. The caps are called G-quadruplexes, also caled G-4 DNA. So right now they testing it to see if it can extend life or something along that.

Opinion:

Well I think that its very interesting that science is investigating these kinds of things and pushing the science bounderies to the limits. However, I think that they should leave this research alone and to not mess with it. So I'm kind of playing the devil's advocate here in seeing the scientific side and the humane side of the whole investigation. yes it is very cool to see that people could actually live longer, but we also have to see the negative outcomes in continuing this research. So I'm really not sure on what to think about this.
