The article referenced can be found here. Chitons, a species of mollusk, have evolved to have calcium carbonate crystal eyes. There are hundreds of these eyes on the three inch long mollusk, and these eyes have lenses of argonite. At first, when these eye-like structures were discovered, it was unknown whether these were eyes that could see things, or mere sensors that would detect the changes in light. When an experiment was preformed, it was discovered that human vision is roughly 1000 times sharper than the vision of your average chiton; however, it remains unknown if the chitons respond to the addition or removal of light. I find the eyes of the chiton rather interesting. The fact that they are the only animal that has been discovered to make lenses out of argonite is unbelievable. You'd think that with hundreds of eyes, that the chiton would have better vision than what it does. I'm hoping more research can come out of interesting discoveries such as this one.
