Even though it might seem gross or maybe a little disturbing, scientists at North Carolina State University have started a research called the Belly Button Biodiversity project. The meaning of the project is to track many microorganisms inside a human navel. To get the samples needed, subjects receive a clean cotton swab. Then the subject turns the cotton swab around in there belly button three times and then places the swab in a vial. The researchers then grew the bacteria in a culture and once the bacteria has grown it is photographed(see the photos at http://www.wildlifeofyourbody.org/?page_id=201) then showed to the subject. In the end, the researchers found Staphylococcus epidermidis(the most prevalent skin bacteria), as well as other bacteria's, molds, fungi, and yeast.
My opinion on this study is that it is interesting, but disgusting. The study is very creative and a good idea because it shows the bacteria. But may be weird, unnecessary, or a waste of time to others. It may cause some people to be more worried about personal hygiene.. which is not necessarily a bad thing. So all in all, clean your belly buttons people.
