Summary: A certain protein known as TRIM5 prevents the HI virus from multiplying once it enters the body. This opens new possibilities of a cure for the virus. Unlike humans, night monkeys are resistant to HIV thanks to a special protein called TRIM5. This defense mechanism was established by Swiss teams in collaboration with teams from the U.S. and France. Humans also have this protein but it is less effective in fighting HIV. Currently two million die of HIV each year and 2.7 million are still infected.
Opinion: I find the talk of any type of working on a cure for HIV fascinating. I think its kind of weird that the rhesus monkey are resistant to HIV since humans and monkeys are so similar. Especially since that's where the virus originally came from. I think its really sad that many people are still dying from this virus. I hope that soon enough no one will have to suffer with this virus anymore. This was a very important current event in my opinion.
