Savanna Elephants
Savanna elephants are at risk in Chad's Zakouma National Park. Ivory poachers are rapidly declining the elephant population. Since 2006, about 2,000 elephants have been killed when herds leave outside of the park during the season changes. Park guards are also at risk, several have been shot and killed. WCS(world conservation society) says "The situation in Zakouma is dire, but there is still time to save the park's remanining elephants provided we can marshal the forces we need to stop poaching". Funds have been put in place to help save these elephants, various levels of government have invested more than $18 million. This situation is difficult to get under control. Ivory is a top selling item and elephants unforuntanly pay a high price for human greed. Poachers have gone great lenghts to obtain guns and amiunition to hunt and kill savanna elephants. Many ideas have probably been thought over serval times, and mine is to ban all guns within a certain amount of miles near a national park with elephants or near large groups of them. To stop selling guns with in the area's elephant population is high. This could possibly reduce the poaching, or have no effect at all. Either way it has to stop soon. Losing African savanna elephants would be a great loss to the world. http://www.macroevolution.net/savanna-elephants.html
