On March 3, 2011, Scripps Research Institute reported that the original idea of Alzheimer's disease may be altered because of unexpected results from research conducted recently. The liver is now thought to be the source of a substance entitled "amyloid" that contribute to brain plaques associated with the disease. Scientists used a mouse model to test current theories. Their results conveyed levels of presenilin within the liver. That cell membrane protein is thought to contribute to the development of Alzheimer's. Scientists hope that this discovery will lead towards treatments and prevention.
This discovery caught my attention since my grandma has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Even though she is in the advanced stage, I hope this research will lead to success in finding a cure for future victims. It seems interesting that the liver would be involved; I've always thought of the origins of Alzheimer's occurring primarily in the brain. This could be a major steppingstone in the progression to end the Alzheimer's epidemic. With the disease expected to spread even more in the future, it's important to commit to research now. This discovery could definitely be a clue in the mystery of Alzheimer's.
