Monitoring Coral Reefs

Chris Langdon, along with other scientists from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, have recently developed a new tool to monitor the vital signs of coral reefs. The purpose of this tool is to accurately measure the biological pulse of the reefs. Scientists hope the tool will assist in determining how climate change and other economical threats impact the ecosystems. The tool will measure dissolved oxygen production, which leads to measuring the results of the production and consumption of the organic matter within the reef. This advancement is expected to expand the studies in protection of coral reefs.

Coral reefs play a huge role in the world today and are many times forgotten about or simply ignored. 75% of the world's coral reefs are endangered primarily because of human influence. My hope is that this tool will help prove the huge impact humans are having on the coral reefs. Something needs to be done to prevent complete destruction and depletion of the precious and abundant ecosystems. This new too could lead to long-term resolutions needed to protect the coral reefs.
