In Southern China, over 15 different species of fossils have been found. Most of these were a worm type creature that lived in oxygen deprived water, but realsed oxygen when they died. This created black shale. They also found types of algae. Scientists believe that this created a snow ball effect and is what started "oxygen" in us living organisms.
I find this very interesting. It's hard to believe that we all developed a need for oxygen based on these worms, who didn't even need oxygen during their life! I also think it's cool that they found tons of fossils embedding in the shale. Usually when species are in black shale, they do not hold up, but in this case they are as fresh as the day they started decomposition. That is a plus for the biologists studying these fossils.
