Reasearchers say they have found another cause of childhood obesity; school lunches. A study of more than 1,000 sixth grade students in a few school in southeastern Michigan found that the students who regularly eat lunch from school were 29 percent more likely to become obese than those who bring their lunch from home. If child stay inside and play video games or watched television for two hours, that increases the risk of obesity by 19 percent. In most schools, studies show that special days are given names, such as "tater tot day". But don't worry too much, help is coming; a federal law, by the Department of Agriculture, is being passed in December stating that there will be a number of calories served in a school meal every day. There will also be a program offering broad varieties of fruits and vegetables; not just corn and potatoes.
I think this law is just what schools need. Children of all ages need to have a well balanced meal instead of eating french fries or tater tots every day. A calorie counted meal will provide children the energy, protein, and right amounts of nutrients they need throughout school day. It will give them healthier bellies, but also smarter minds for them to concentrate better. This law should be passed and the guidelines should be carried through to create a healthier generation of children.
